Welcome to your guide toAgadir, Morocco
Sited on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, 200 kilometres to the south of Marrakesh, Agadir is a first class choice as a beach resort holiday destination. This modern town offers numerous accommodation options right on the edge of the superb six kilometres of fine sandy beaches.
Since the tragic earthquake on 29 February 1960 destroyed the town, there are few remaining vestiges of Agadir’s rich history. However, despite its modernity, the town has preserved a timeless charm thanks to the friendliness of the inhabitants. Visitors would enjoy the historic Old City, but the new medina is also of great interest as it is a perfect fusion between a traditional style and the demands of contemporary urban landscapes. There is also the fishing port and the superb Agadir Marina.
Resolutely maritime in its attitudes, Agadir offers numerous possibilities for water sports, for enjoying downtime and finding a feeling of well-being. Consult our Moroccan Directory

Erected in 1540 by Mohamed Ech-Cheikh, the old Kasbah is the most ancient monument in Agadir, although this great fortress, built to protect Agadir from attacks by the Portuguese, was ruined by the earthquake in 1960 and only vestiges of the original construction remain.
The ramparts have been rebuilt and stand on a promontory overlooking the town, silent witnesses to the Kasbah’s glorious past and offering magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean. The main entrance is an interesting feature – it was built by the Dutch in the eighteenth century and sports an inscription in Dutch reminding visitors to ‘fear God and respect the king’. These days, a visit to the old Kasbah is for some people a pilgrimage undertaken in memory of the Agadir that disappeared in 1960.
Built with great attention to the smallest architectural detail, it is hard to believe that this Medina was rebuilt as recently as 1992. This set of alleyways, some vaulted and some open to the sky, are lined with small shops offering products made in the workshops of the one hundred or so craftsmen who invested in the construction. A visit to the Medina is therefore a chance to see an interesting blend of tradition and modernity.
